1894 Scholarship Program

Where Your Gift Counts Twice!  Your generous contribution to Woodward’s 1894 Scholarship Program will be dedicated to scholarships for students attending Woodward.  You will be recognized as a donor to both the scholarship of your choosing and The Woodward Annual Fund.  You may also choose to establish a named scholarship in honor of an alumna or another person whom you wish to recognize.

At its founding, The Woodward School began its historic commitment to ensure access to every girl who merits admission. Our goal is to make it possible for every qualified applicant to enroll in Woodward. A large portion of the financial assistance awarded to eligible students is funded by generous gifts from Woodward’s benefactors. Without this support from alumnae and friends of the School, Woodward would not be able to continue to meet the financial needs of our students.

You may choose to donate to The 1894 Scholarship Fund (a general aid fund), to one of the already established scholarships listed below, or you may choose to establish a new named scholarship.

  • Katherine Bacon Scholarship - Katherine Bacon was the Headmistress and Latin teacher at Woodward for over forty years. Many of the School’s alumnae speak of Miss Bacon with great fondness and recall her high standards.  This scholarship is awarded to the student who is entering Woodward’s high school with the highest grade point average at the end of her 8th grade year.
  • Robert L. Johnston Memorial Scholarship - Robert L. Johnston, or "Mr. J.," as he was affectionately known to his students, was a Headmaster of The Woodward School for 16 years. Faculty and former students remember him as an inspiration, who led by example, and was steadfast in his dedication to Woodward. Mr. Johnston was focused on students’ growth, academically and outside of the classroom. This scholarship is awarded to an Upper School student who has demonstrated outstanding citizenship in service to the School community.
  • Ruth Marshall Paven ’46 Scholarship - Ruth Marshall Paven, a 1946 graduate of Woodward, continued her education at Radcliffe College, Harvard Law School and Georgetown Law School, culminating in her becoming the first woman to receive a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown Law in 1953. She enjoyed a lengthy career, representing such organizations as the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the Massachusetts Department of Labor and Industry, the Massachusetts Division of Capital Planning and Operations, and the Massachusetts Port Authority. In the late 1960s, Ruth represented Woodward in a case that went to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, where she prevailed in allowing non-Quincy born girls to attend Woodward. She has been deeply committed to civic causes in Quincy, from the League of Women Voters to The Woodward School, where she was Chairwoman of the Donors Fund. In 2011, Ruth was honored as a Woodward Woman of Distinction. This scholarship is awarded to a student of exceptional merit and value to the Woodward community.
  • Louise Hey Randall ’42 Memorial Scholarship - Louise Hey Randall, a 1942 Woodward graduate and longtime supporter of the School, attended Boston University and the Massachusetts General School of Nursing. A mother of six, teacher and anthropologist, she enjoyed the sisterhood of many family members who also attended The Woodward School. Louise served on a number of boards, including Woodward’s Donors Fund Board and Board of Trustees, the Quincy Registrar of Voters, Quincy Symphony Orchestra, and Harvard University’s Museum of Natural History. This scholarship is awarded to a student for demonstrated leadership and academic growth.
  • Leona E. Roccuzzo, P ‘99 Memorial Scholarship - Leona E. Roccuzzo, mother of Sarah Hogan ’99, was a strong supporter of the mission of The Woodward School, and the advancement of women in education and the workplace. A proud Quincy native and Tufts University graduate, she touched the lives of many during her 35-year career in occupational therapy, later earning a master’s degree in psychology and an EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) certification. She was passionate about the performing and visual arts, West Coast Swing dancing, working with children on the autism spectrum, and the powerful relationship that can exist between horses and humans. This scholarship is awarded to an Upper School student who has expressed interest in science, psychology or the arts.
  • Trustee Scholarship - The Woodward Trustee Scholarship supports the mission of our Founders to ensure access to a Woodward education for every student who merits admission. This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates character and commitment to her education.
  • Woodward Alumnae Association Scholarship - The Woodward Alumnae Association Scholarship is given each year, borne from the desire of alumnae to help the School fulfill its founding mission to provide the outstanding college preparatory education that benefitted them as students and as women in the world. This scholarship is awarded to students who best exemplify the School’s motto, “Discimus Ut Ducamus” – We Learn So That We May Lead.
